A lot of people these days are complaining about the gas prices these days. I used to be one of them, until I did a bit of research. What  i have learned is that the prices we have been paying for gas were cheaper than ever. The increases in pump costs on average about as much as it has for the past 80+ years. Sure you remember when gas used to cost much less, but what you are not thinking about is inflation. Adjusted for inflation gas is still cheaper than it once was. Between the early 1920's and mid 1940's gas cost more at the pump than it does now. Although for a short few years around 1930 it was cheaper. After the start of World War II Prices began dropping until the 1970's. During the late 70's early 80's gas prices were at their real all-time highs. Much Higher than they are now. During the mid 80's prices dropped dramatically to levels lower than ever before. The increase now is due to the increase in crude oil prices, which have been going up dramatically. Due to this the oil industry needs to look into alternative fuel sources. While there is a lot of news about record profits, much of these profits are going to fund projects for new fuel sources. If "Big Oil: did not increase profits, research would stagnate, and we would be burning oil for a long time. If not for government regulations our free market would have produced alternative fuel sources or cheaper gas long ago. Because regulations keep oil companies from competing and therefore forcing them to produce cheaper gas or alternative fuel sources much more quickly, we are not prepared for the increase is crude oil prices. And if you need to put things in perspective you still pay more for a gallon of milk than you do for a gallon of gas. And cows are reneawable. Now, if any of you have any ideas about conspiracy theories between oil companies and auto manufaturers, think again. There is no logical reasoning for such conspiracies to happen. Oil companies can invest in new energy sources, long term costs for these new energy sources will probably be much cheaper than the hit or miss practice of drilling for oil. Not to mention production will probably reqiure less manpower than drilling operations. This will allow oil comapnies to still make a very nice profit, with wich they can fund more projects which benifit us. They also move to non-regulated fuel sources which benifit you and me through competition. Car companies still need to make cars that take advantage of these new energy types. Which with increases in gas prices will push people to buy these new types of cars. And guess what, without oil profits new energy sources will not get the funding they need for resaerch, testing, and eventually installation. So, in other words, get over it.
